They requested if they may submit a group of twenty kids, ages nine to twelve, to my school. Three weeks after they snapped my picture in the school gym, I received a call.
Before being cast, Watson had to go through a really taxing audition procedure, maybe eight times in total. She was certain that someone with greater experience would win the role. She was very easy to get along with. Perhaps at the time, I was a lot like her,” she clarified. “My parents were obviously terrified by everything—thousands and thousands of girls were trying out for the audition, and they were worried about what would happen to me if I didn’t get it.”

“I was anxious and tense before the audition. And I was told by a young director I had worked with briefly that, “You’re probably going to be one of the best actors they’ve seen all week when you go in for this audition because you have this thing in your head that you’re less than.” I have it still,” Oldman said to us. “Performers and creative people naturally exhibit egomania and low self-esteem, in my opinion. To just stand in front of others, you need to be motivated by something, yet doing so also carries a fragility and insecurity.
“I believe that’s what keeps pushing you to get better and better and better,” he continued. However, I do recall that it was incredibly beneficial and that it eased the tension. Additionally, take your time. Take a deep breath and go slowly. What counts is that if they make you feel horrible, it’s possible they weren’t worth striving for in the first place. I always believe that being kind and courteous doesn’t have to cost much.
